! A Wagstaffe family thanks to those that sent letters of condolences - !
  • Thanks to those that sent letters and cards to all the family they were appreciated.
  • Unless one has suffered the debilitating loss of a child it is difficult to feel the pain and many see the off had attitude as being ungrateful - Not so there are people and there again there are people
  • Many have known Nichola since she was born some of those responded with letters reminding us of events we had forgotten and we say thanks for them remembering those yesterdays in our time of need - Others walked to the other side probably not knowing what to say - they will eventually find the courage
  • Others sent seeing it their duty, they were rebuffed as they had rebuffed Nichola in her life's endeavours
  • In any difficult time or crisis there is always one person that stands out one Organisation that gives all for no reward we say thanks to two - Brian Holmes (Fellow Welsh man from Swansea) and his organisation Racing Welfare Lambourn Office under President The Princess Royal who leapt into action Immediately and continues to support and to Millie Scott (who Nichola played 4 goal at Beaufort 2003) of the HPA who on knowing of our plight offered all they could to assist
  • Honesty is a gift rare in our modern world but still exists in some company we wish to remember
  • To all those who supported us we say thanks - To those who wanted to but felt embarrassed thanks
  • To be reminded of the mousetrap and pigs and to receive the card with such a wonderful work of art and appropriate explanation thought and belief is friendship to behold - Thanks to you both
  • For my friend from Faslane thanks for remembering us at this time and for your card - please send your address and telephone number would love to talk to you again
  • Over 250 attended the funeral at Lambourn equestrians from all disciplines, directors and coaches from the British Racing School where was a Student, directors of Inglesham Polo club, polo patrons, polo coaches, players, racing lads and asses, racing horse owners, trainers, and officials and so on all to say their goodbyes to a friend - some only having known her for weeks days and months such was her -
  • In Scotland many turned out to say their goodbyes - Gail Rogan and family, Jackie McShane and family, Henry Hill and Family and Billy Stewart and his team taking time out from the days business and Showjuming competition to support us in our grief. Countless local riders riding club chair and members that Nichola had competed with joined the congregation. Teachers from schools Nichola had attended when severn, and polo player rushed from the Farewell tournament at Perth to pay their respects, took time out to be with us and we thank them and all that made the evening special. The Rev Mrs Sheila Spence explained to me it was the first time she had taken a service for a teenager in all her years in the church - made even more difficult having known Nichola since the age of 18 months

Nichola was a member of Lanark and Upperward Ponyclub, shared editor, author and inspiration of this site.
As a ponyclub member for 12 years, she competed for her club in all equestrian sports including Polo, playing both for her club and Scotland. After completing her standard grades and highers, she worked for three years at Inglesham Polo centre, with talented internationals from all over the world, learning Spanish to be able to converse with the Argentinean Grooms and players. She transferred her interest and determination to racing and following training at the British School of Racing Newmarket; where she was head girl in her course, she settled in Lambourn the heart of racing in Berkshire.
At 1920hrs on Monday evening 30th August, just 30 days after her 19th birthday, Nichola was riding her bicycle out of Neardown Racing Stables Upper Lambourn with friend John, on her way to continue training her own string of former racehorses.

Nichola was struck by a car, suffered extreme injury, and killed out right.
The feeling of loss felt by us her family, those friends, trainers, owners, jockeys and polo players is immense.

As her family we can only thank her for all our yesterdays, the enjoyment of being her friend, being fortunate to see her jump in competitions from Aberdeen to Truro, groom for and play polo with some of the top internationals in the world, and we regret beyond belief, being cheated out of her tomorrows by James Bobbin of London driving his Porsche on a bank holiday, through Upper Lambourn on a family visit.

We thank the Scottish Daily Express, the Scottish Daily Mail, the Racing Post and Radio Clyde for their recognition of Nichola's talents taking time out to print photos and accounts of Nichola's gifts to the Equestrian world, the Racing Welfare Organisation under their president The Princess Royal, for their immediate and continuing support, and the Thames Valley Police for all their assistance in the ongoing enquires.

Followed by a Thanks Giving Service at 1800hrs on the evening of the 19th September 2004 at

Folk are preferring to make donations in place of flowers so that her work will continue, with the team she had gathered around her for her new place out side Salisbury, and these can be sent for "Nicky's dream" c/o Ainsley Properties, 5 Windsor Road Barry, South Glamorgan.

! Dundee and Perth Take on an Irish Team!!! !
  • A polo tournament at Dundee and Perth Polo Club on August 22nd, It is also a great day out for all at their Scone Palace Grounds. We understand there may be a demonstartion of Bicycle Polo This has become an anual thrash preceeded by the clubs HighLand ball on the Saturday night. Ground opens at 1200hrs. Bring a picnic and enjoy the excitement of polo. Well worth a visit

! Dundee and Perth Play in Newport Polo Club Rhode Island in America!! !
  • Scotland by way of a Dundee and Perth Team played in the anual Newport International Polo Series which is series of low goal games against England, France, Chile, Spain, Argentina, Ireland, Portugal and some times Costa Rica, Jamaica, or Ghana. These matches are well attended by the locals and are alot of fun. The way it works with the horses is that if you lend horses to an international team then you are invited to play on their horses the following year. The Scottish team did well beating their American opponents and then went on to beat Ghana. We wish them continued success in their quest. I met with Leonard Nihan captain of the Newport team in 2002 when I groomed for him when Newport played an extra game against Cirencester following their game against Guards. A charming man with a great polo attitude of international friendship sending me a Newport number 3 Jesey which I very much appreciated.
We wish Scotland all the best with the remainder of the competition -- Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe

  • Nichola worked with Leonard Nihan At Inglesham and Cirencester -
    E-mail After 911
    Dear Nichola,
thanks for your e-mail and I am pleased you received the shirt. Thank you for your condolences too. It feels very different around here now that this has happened. Newport, Rhode Island is our town and our summer series is called the Newport International Polo Series which is series of low goal games against England, France, Chile, Spain, Argentina, Ireland, Portugal and some times Costa Rica, Jamaica, or Ghana. These matches are well attended by the locals and are alot of fun. The way it works with the horses is that if you lend horses to an international team then you are invited to play on their horses the following year- hence our prescence in the UK last July. We added the Cirencester match to our pre-arranged match with Ham Polo Club in London. Unfortunately, we have lost the lease on our polo ground and we are not sure where we will be playing nextsummer. The series is so popular that I am sure we will find another ground. If you would be interested in grooming over here next summer I am sure I could help you, in fact I will be looking for someone to help me next summer with my children- two boys aged 8 and 6 so we could combine duties if you want. That gives you something to think about. Best Regards, Leonard Nihan

! Polo in Scotland - Club Round Up !Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
  • Scottish Polo in the North where John Crawford of Hayfield Riding & Polo Club who started to play in 1992, continues to enthuse Ponyclub and University players arranging training rallies and chukkas at their Complex in Aberdeen. His son Chris him self from ponyclub polo now playing professionally returns regularly to help in the centres work, joining up with Vet Jim Dukes at Arboyn organising pony club polo rallies and training.
  • We understand Perth & Dundee have become even more selective. Now limiting club chukkas and matches to members and those having achieved -1 handicap leaving those would be players to find alternative places of play. Fortunately The Drummond Morray Training centre at Blare is more than is filling this need providing training and pony facilities for all ages.
  • Polo in Edinburgh continues to grow with Lord and Lady Morton together with their Son Jamie and daughter in-law Anne Douglas enthusing and welcoming university and young players eager to learn the game. The club are home of Edinburgh University and with their all year grass and arena facilities are encouraging many teams from the south to tournaments that can only improve the development of Scottish Polo at all levels.
  • There is good news for those in the West of Scotland as we have a new club formed by Karina Bowlby herself an acomplished polo player at Edinburgh and from a racing family determined to put something back into the sport. The club is now open with a few ponies and some good facilities and Argentinean coaches well worth a visit being only 10 miles from Glasgow
  • Ponyclub polo has a new Co-ordinator Katie Coward taking over from Sue Stirling-Aird and approved by David Cowley chair of Ponyclub UK. The same Polo format and ethos as that started by Perth & Dundee in 1992 continues, but has become even more introverted with edicts from Area Reps insisting that clubs with few players have to submit names to the committee for possible playing places. Whether it will be good for young folks Polo in Scotland remains to be seen
  • At Scot-polo we continue to enthuse local youngsters distributing books on various disciplines. The aim is to assist the would be players in the rules of each discipline with exercises that can be carried out safely at home and thereby improve their achievements at training sessions
  • ! Polo Rules Training !Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
Seasoned and young players get trained as a C umpire. It helps you play safely and polo in general. Don't be satisfied with less - All ponyclub chukkas and game must be umpired with a C grade umpire
Arthur Douglas Nugent, HPA Chief Umpire will be delighted to hear from you
Remember - "The better the Umpire the better the game" - & Scotland needs you

  • C GRADE UMPIRE TESTS
The following have been arranged: Sat 24 April - 10:00 at Easebourne Village Institute, Midhurst. Sat 24 April - 10:30 at Sherborne Arms, Aldsworth (NE of Cirencester on B4425) Sat 8 May - 10:30 at Guards Polo Club, Windsor

Playing Polo -Learn the rules - Get qualified
Arthur Douglas Nugent, HPA Chief Umpire is a great guy and enthuses folk on the rules of polo. One only has to meet him to expect help in becoming a Grade C umpire. He has developed a wonderfull exam method to stretch students and identify their rulkes knowledge. Papers include many questions one using the HPA rule book and the other using your knowledge. His cleverly set questions with several answers that are right so difficult if you don't know your rules.
Remember - "The better the Umpire the better the game" -

  • We understand all potential ponyclub polo players have to submit their names to Katie Coward and her committee before they are allowed to play in any tournaments. The choice of whether you play or not lies with Mrs Kate Cowan and her committee.
Mrs Kate Cowan can be contacted on 01856 751301 and kt752@hotmail.com

! L&U Out of Playing Ponyclub Polo !Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
  • We have been advised today that members of Lanark and Upperward ponyclub are not allowed to play for their club. New regulations have been severely invoked by Area Reps forcing potential players to submit names to the Scottish Ponyclub representative Katie Coward and her committee who will decide suitability to be slotted into teams. A very sad day for ponyclub polo players in Scotland.

! Young Player Grade C Umpire status !Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
    • Congratulations to:-
Tim Bromley-Martin, Kirtlinton Polo Club on achieving Grade C umpire Status in 2003.
Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe, Inglesham Polo Club granted her Grade C Status aged 16 in 2001.
    • Nichola is probably the youngest player in Scotland to pass the exam and be awarded the HPA
      C Grade Umpire qualification.

    • Lets see more Scottish young players taking this quite stringent exam as it can only improve the standard of play, and young players understanding of the rules.

    • It would do no harm for some of the old lags to update thir umpire knowledge and status by way of exam!!.
    • !! Remember only official Grade C umpires are allowed to officiate at Pony-club Chukkas !!

! 2003 -2004 Closure for the Parents of Holly & Jessica - Hopefully !It's The Scottish Polo Website
Easy to tell lies Photo © BBC Wales At this time of supposed merriment, and Christmas excitement, we take time out to understand the feelings of despair and sadness felt by Holly and Jessica's family. A trial of their daughter's attacker revealed some of the truth - but not the all important answer why?
Whilst the writer has never lost family permanently, as in this case, they have lost significantly with the associated indifference of those supposedly empowered to help. Their family is in the distance but to all intent and purpose lost to the writer, sufficiently so that that the writer can well understand their feelings. Hard as it may be, try to put behind the feelings of hate that return to you in your hours alone, if not Huntly and Carr will have won in all ways. Nothing can bring Holly and Jessica back and our tired society seems to condone the actions of these people, since if those that were attacked; as they now state in the press possible for money, had the guts to come forward, correct checks were done on folk in positions of school carers, then who knows how different things may have been.
Go forward with the memories of Holly and Jessica in the days of love enjoyment excitement and youth, with strength, and bathe in the remainder of your family with fond thoughts of your lost children and let no one allow you to loose those kind thoughts. Our thoughts are with you, albeit you know us not.
! Pony Club Polo in Scotland !It's The Scottish Polo Website
We have noted in the press in recent months honours being taken by Kate Coward in respect of organising events associated with Pony Club Nationally in Scotland. It was even suggested that she had organised the Lanark and Upperward club effort whilst writing in magazines and Websites. The application for the inclusion of the Lanark and Upperward Polo team in the Pony-club National Championships was made by the club DC and the team was managed by appointed Branch Polo manager David MacDonald-Wagstaffe and not Katie Coward as reported in the Scottish Equestrian magazine in September. Further Lanark and Upperward were self financed and whilst helped by Inglesham Polo centre in livery and coaching were in no way financed by moneys received from pony-club run events in Scotland. I think it is time to report that Kate Coward has no responsibility for any Pony-Club entering the National polo Championships other than her own club Orkney of which she is appointed polo Branch manager by her DC, endorsed by the National Pony-club Polo Committee. There is no official Pony-club Polo committee in Scotland other than that invented by Dundee and Perth Polo Club by way of increasing their club finances. They do a great job providing training for the young would be polo players, albeit they are selective with their choice of attendees, but this continuos business of posing as pony-club should stop. The Dundee and Perth Website Contacts Page makes it quite clear that Kate Coward represents the Dundee and Perth Pony-club interests and that is all. Any Pony-club is entitled to enter any national Competition as long as the club abides by the rules appertaining to that competition. No club needs to be beholding to Dundee & Perth Polo Club or Katie Coward of Orkney for the chance to compete or need be assessed by any Scottish Polo Club to ascertain players ability to compete.
  • Lanark and Upperward team wish to convey their thanks to their DC Jenny Rae for making it possible for the team to compete in 2003 having been sadly left out in 2002 by the miss-understanding as revealed above.
  • To Roddie Williams managing Director of Inglesham Polo Club for his generous sponsorship of the team and coaching encouragement throughout the whole of the tournament in 2001 and again in 2003.
  • This unselfish attitude is prevalent in the English polo scene but so rare in Scottish Polo.

A dream coming true and being actioned after three years of saving Planning and learning horse care since before 2000 they were just other Animals in a field.
This dedicated unassuming guy, is almost half way there, in the quest to realise his dream. Having walked from Crawley to the tip of Cornwall then through Wales and the Lowlands of Scotland this country caring man moves on.
His aim to, make folk aware of them selves their heritage and the countryside and to promote two charities, dear to him. Riding for the Dissabled (RDA) and the Association of Servicemen.
Simon stayed with us at Scotpolo in Lanarkshire just turning up n Tuesday morning hours after we had returned from the South quite low, after not qualifying our club Lanark & Upperward in the Ponyclub Polo competition in the early hours of the morning.
There was no time to feel sorry for our selves as Simon was great company. He was eager to try his hand at polo and whilst we thought him to be a rider mounted him on a sharp Argy pony.
All credit to him; after admitting he was not a rider, with some comprehensive Scotpolo coaching he was soon hitting the ball both off and near side as good as any Scottish player. I say that since Simon is of Scottish descent.
Look out for him on your travels he has some fundamental thoughts great company, he's not looking for anything except friendship company and support for his charities. ** Scottish Elections **
It is quite amazing how a country of 5 million+ people can be brain washed by fewer that 150 politicians into believing that Scotland is a democracy. We have just spent 500 millions building a hutch for these people and their hangers on, whilst people starve in the streets. We are led to believe, our fate is goverened by such people, yet the realiy is not such. Central government; at HQ in England, decided that divide and conquor was an easier tool to gain total control. Give the masses the freedom they require, yet all the time keeping tight control. Each first minister in Scotland has come under scrutiny for behaviour, whilst kidding the electorate along the road to auatonomoy. None have the honesty to say if they don't want it in Downing street we can't have it. Marionettes dangling in a play stimulated to move as and when required by greater powers in control yet all the time fooling the 'HoyPoloy' into believing in them. One feels for the unseen tyranny in the policies being forced on the Scottish people Comment 1st may 2003

Two Great Polo Players were Honored at British Masters Tournament
The Earl of Morton Edinburgh Polo Club and Irelands Major Hugh Dawney Whitfield Court Park Polo Club were honored this year at the British Masters Tournament at Dallus Burston Polo club at Southam, for their life long service to the game.
Having played with and against both players in my early polo days in Scotland I still remember with affection the unselfish giving of knowledge and enthusiasm by both John and Hugh that I have retained and still pass on to the younger player. We at Scottish Polo Website wish to add our congratulations and thanks for their dedication to the game over the years.

The British Masters Tournament Played at Dallus Burston Southam
This competition is played in friend ship, without the pressure of professionals, where those experienced players can meet up with old friends and rivals where the minimum playing age is 50 or over with the handicaps of 2 or less.
This year 34 players took part in the three day tournament. The final was between Roark and Wodehouse, and after an exciting game Roark ran out the the winners. The Roark team included, John Nash from Yorkshire, Earl of Morton from Scotland, Stephen Hutchinson from Ireland, and David Bazzard from Buckinshire. The Wodehouse team included Charles Betz from USA, Charles Lousada from Bedfordshire, John Wong from Singapore, and Nicholas Kneale from Oxfordshire. A truly internation final with the oldest member the Earl of Morton at 77 playing a storming game to clinch the close run match

    HPA Umpire Qualifications
Well done to Chris Crawford from Kirtlington Polo Club who achieved his C Grade umpire qualification in 2002. He joins Nichola Wagstaffe Inglesham Polo Club who gained hers in September 2001 a month after her 16th Birthday. We would hazard she is probably the youngest umpire in Scotland. It is heartening to see these keen young players setting an example to young and old players alike.
Chris of Hayfield Polo Club Aberdeen and Nichola of Lanark & Upperward Pony Club meet regularly on the Polo competition circuit in the South.
Scottish Polo Website congratulate the Chief Umpire Arthur Douglas-Nugent for arranging teachins on the rules and encouraging more young players to sit the 42 question written paper. Lets face it, it can only have a much needed positive effect on club polo.

*****A new and Growing Polo Comunity*****
It has been a great joy and experience for the Road Show Team being able to meet pony club members in those clubs that are willing to try a new sport. It is a credit to their DC's and their commitees that they are sufficiently far sited to introduce a new sport to their members at a fun camp where the whole ethos is to explore and enjoy equestrian endevour.
It is so refreshing to see good allround riders taking the game on and enjoying it.
    ****The Road Show Aims****
The aim of the Road Show is to give Pony clubs a taste of the game on 'Fluffies' untrained handy ponies and trained Polo Ponies, from UK and Agentina. All the clubs we visited made it look as though several of their members were set for the Cowdray Experience next year. All the ponies from Sula our well loved 12hh grey mare, Topsie a registerd showjumper, and Fiesta, Fanta and Bonita enjoyed the experience as much as the players.

    ****Eastlothian Pony Club****

Another Area 19 2002 Polo Road Show at Gifford
The road show team were well recieved by the members of Eastlothian Pony Club at their camp at Quarry Field Gifford by kind permission of the Dalrymple family on Monday evening 22nd July 2002. The first day at camp and an evening thrash before supper.
The weather looked kindly upon us as we hacked to a lush 7 acre field where we were greeted by the DC, members of the commitee and 40 willing ponyclubbers.
Members were anxious to learn about the rules, where polo came from, and understand the diferent riding positions for striking the ball and riding off.
The talking over let the pony riding begin.
Mark having played at the Pony Club Championships two years running demonstrated the pony stop and turns, the stick and ball strokes at speed,on a variety of ponies.
The seasoned instructor showed stick position, right of way, and line of the ball, and half seated position whilst on a pony.
Supper time beginning to loom, the call 'Who wants a go' was made.
Members flooded forward, but with only five ponies available, it meant that some did not have a go even with the fastest of changes.
For those that did, striking the ball, manipulating the ponies with the left hand and being ridden off in a two against two became great fun.
Hopefully we can return and develop organised chukkas where every one can enjoy the play The road show team thank you for having us and for feeding us all so well.
There is nothing nicer for an instructor than to have a captured audience, but when that audience are truly interested it makes the coaching all the more worth while.
