We missed 2002 but not 2003 I'm going to be there
Pony Club Polo Summer Training Camp at Perth
The camp is over three days are well worth a visit. it is held at Perth & Dundee Polo Club at Scone Palace Perth.
We cater for those wishing to camp and enjoy the three day "Extraveganza".
At camp we have training in rules, polo riding, stick work and training chukkas.
All ages of pony club can take part the only limitation is that you must be a current PONY CLUB MEMBER
Evenings are taken up with the boring
Bicycle polo, Dances, Barbques, Discos and stuff like that.
The camp has been running since 1996 and last year we had over 60 playing members from as far as Orkney in the North and Kelso in the South. To book your place for 2003 you will need to register with Mrs Cate Coward the Scottish Pony Club Polo Co-ordinator details can be found on the Pony Club Polo page.
Interested then let us know and we will sent you details by E-mail.

"This is New Folks!!"
Hey Pony Club Area 19 are planning a Spring Polo Challenge
We need branches in the North South East and West of the Area to host the training and competition days when we can invite surrounding Pony Clubs to join us and take part.
If we can get enough interest we would like to establish an interclub competition and then an international between Ireland and Scotland.
It would be nice to give Ireland a good game as last time they were here we were soundly thrashed.
So come on all you games people that are keen on a fast and furious sport and if you have the equestrian abilities to play games polo will be a dawdle.

The playing groups in polo have different names from the games where the teams are called Junior or Senior.

At Pony-club Polo we now have five different levels as detailed below.
A group for everyones ability and pony power

Jorrocks
A group for players that have not reached their 12th Birthday and may only play on "fluffies" Ponies that are handy ponies and not Polo Ponies

! New Group for ponyclub polo !
! - Surtees - !
  • A new group for those players that have not reached their 14th Birthday on 1st January and is the same as Handley cross except they can use polo ponies that have not played high or medium goal polo in the current year. Note:- Surtees players may not play in any other section. Players with handicap of -1 and 0 must play for their own branch

Handley Cross
  • A group for those players that have not reached their 14th Birthday and may only play on "fluffies" -> Ponies that are handy ponies, games or showjumpers but not Polo Ponies

Lorriner
  • A group of players that have not attained their 16th Birthday. This group are allowed to use either "Fluffies" or Polo Ponies

! - Rendel- Langford - Gannon - !
  • These three groups are for players between 16 and 21years and tend to be the higher standard of player. Once again these players use Polo Ponies but could equally use "Fluffies" if they felt that the pony would be good enough for the standard of the game being played

A Parent's View of Polo
  • Most parents think that in the early stages they will have to buy Polo Ponies, this is not the case. The sport is no different in the quality of pony that you would use for showjumping or crosscountry. If you wish your child to jump 1.45m then you would invest in a JA pony. However if you wish to jump unaffiliated then "Dobbin Pony" is just the job. Its the same with polo this year we played at the Pony Club Polo Championships with a showjumper that won a class at Aberdeen and jumped at the Solihull Finals. She was made into a polo pony by us at a pony club camp to show that it could be done. The fact that she was a fluffy meant that we could lend her to the Berkley for the Cirencester final when one of their ponies went lame.

Parents Worries
  • Quite often parents view polo as a dangerous sport, its too hard on the ponies, costs too much, the ponies wear too much leather and so on.
Polo is a great sport and is govererned sternly by the Pony Club and the Hurlingham Polo Association the world governing body.
  • ! - Allowable Periods of Pony Play - !
As a matter of interest A Pony may only play a maximum of three seven minute chukkas in a day. The game is fast so the rules are exacting.

A Final Thought

As you can see there is ample opportunity for all ages and abilities to take part with or without polo ponies. Games ponies make ideal polo ponies for the beginner as they are used to bending, changing direction and stopping and starting very quickly. It would be nice to see players of all the age groups from all the area 19 Pony Clubs.
The training days will be full of fun, with lots to see and learn. Equipment will be provided and there will be "Fluffies" and trained Polo Ponies for you all to see.

Go on Spoil your self and have a go
Fun to have nothing to loose and Hey!! All to gain!!

You see below players and ponies of all ages enjoying Polo in training and competition.
